This is a typical corrugated iron local shop, originally a grocer’s or general store. It has an attached residence at the back and post-supported verandah with corrugated roofing, also typical of the era.
In the 1890s, the population of Broken Hill was growing rapidly and housing was in high demand. Many shop owners lived on business premises or rented out parts of their building as residences. Some even converted their shops into residences.
Most shops were family-run businesses that specialised in a range of goods, like household goods or clothing.
